3rd May 2013 - Marbury to Ellesmere

Another pleasant day dawned (things are looking up!) and we set off with Ellesmere as our goal - quite a long way.  The day included the only heavy section of locks at Grindley Brook.  This includes a 'staircase' of locks and a lock keeper to help us through.

After Grindley Brook we moved onto Whixhall Moss.  Basically this is a huge (and rare) peat bog, right in deepest darkest Cheshire.  The canal crosses it in a long straight with weird views of desolation to left and right.  Finally we came into Mere country - a group of medium sized lakes, of which Ellesmere is the largest. We moored right next to he lake, but sadly got no TV reception, so upped pins and moved on a little further to just outside Ellesmere town.

Decided that it would be fun to visit the restored Montgomery Canal while we are here.  Only limited numbers of boats are allowed on at a time so I rang Canal & River Trust and booked us in for tomorrow.
