29th June 2013 - Remained at Liverpool

Met up with David and Kay and 'did' the Liverpool Ferry.  David went and hired a 'little tank' for the day - aka a disabled buggy.  The ferry is very different from the service I used to travel to Liverpool on in the 70's.  Then there were two boats operating between Birkenhead and the Pierhead and two between Wallasey and the Pierhead purely for commuters.  Now the emphasis is on touring rather then commuting.  The boat leaves the Pierhead towards the river mouth as far as New Brighton Vale Park, where it turns around and calls at Seacombe terminal in Wallasey.  It then moves on to Birkenhead Woodside, before returning to Liverpool's Pierhead.

Despite an excruciating start to the sound of 'Ferry Cross the Mersey' the trip was actually quite interesting.  There was a taped tour guide throughout, quoting facts and figures that would have done a Soviet or Chinese propagandist proud, but you didn't have to listen to it.

David's little tank made it up a very steeply sloping gangway.  He had so much battery power left that we then went and 'did' the Battle of the Atlantic display off Water Street.  Here the old wartime operations room for the Atlantic convoys has been nicely restored. Very interesting but a little pricey.
